Youth Sprint Training: A Safe, Effective Guide

Training a teenage body well means playing a longer game than chasing this season's fastest time.

A lot of advice aimed at young sprinters is really just adult training, scaled down a little. That's a mistake. A 14 to 17-year-old's body is doing more than absorbing training — it's growing, and growth spurts can temporarily throw off coordination and movement quality in ways that have nothing to do with effort. Training well at this age means working with that, not against it.

Technique before intensity

The biggest long-term advantage a young athlete can build isn't a fast time at 15 — it's clean, efficient movement patterns that hold up as the body gets bigger, stronger and faster over the following years. That means spending real time on technique work (see our start technique guide) before chasing maximal loads or maximal sprint distances. A young athlete with great technique and moderate strength will keep improving for years; one who's strong but technically rough tends to plateau, or get hurt, sooner.

The strength training myth worth retiring

The idea that lifting weights stunts a young athlete's growth is widely repeated and not supported by the evidence — properly supervised resistance training is considered safe and beneficial for youth athletes by major sports medicine and pediatric bodies, and tends to reduce injury risk rather than increase it. The real risk isn't strength training itself, it's poor supervision, poor technique, or loading too much too soon — the same risks that apply to adults, just with a smaller margin for error.

Structuring a youth training week

Variety matters more here than in adult programming. Where possible, encourage multiple sports or movement patterns rather than sprinting and nothing else — most pediatric sports medicine guidance leans against single-sport specialization before puberty, partly to build broader athleticism and partly to protect against overuse injuries from repeating the exact same movements year-round. A reasonable youth sprint week might include two technique-focused track sessions, one supervised gym session with light to moderate loads, and time spent on other sports or general play.

Recognizing overtraining and growth-related issues

Young athletes can struggle to recognize or describe overtraining themselves, so it's worth knowing the common signs: persistent fatigue that doesn't clear with normal rest, declining performance despite consistent effort, mood changes, or recurring pain around growing joints (commonly the knees or heels during growth spurts). None of this is something to self-diagnose or push through — if pain or fatigue is persistent, the right move is involving a parent, coach or doctor rather than guessing.

The role of parents and coaches
