The session that actually makes you faster often happens after you've left the track — in bed, not on it.

Training doesn't make you faster by itself. It creates the stimulus — the fatigue, the muscle damage, the nervous system load — that your body then adapts to during recovery. Skip or shortchange the recovery, and you're left with the fatigue and none of the adaptation. For sprinters specifically, where almost every session leans on a fully recovered nervous system, this matters more than in most sports.

Why sleep matters more for sprinters than it might seem

Sprinting is a nervous-system-driven skill — reaction time, coordination, and the ability to fire muscles explosively all depend on a well-rested central nervous system. Sleep is also when most of the physical repair from training actually happens, through the release of growth hormone and the repair of muscle tissue. Show up under-slept and a session that should sharpen your technique often just grooves a tired, sloppy version of it instead.

How much sleep is enough

General guidance for most adult athletes is 7-9 hours a night, and teenage athletes typically need more — commonly cited targets are closer to 8-10 hours, since growth and development add to recovery demands on top of training. These are ranges, not exact targets — the better marker is how you feel and perform day to day, not hitting a specific number on a tracker.

A consistent sleep schedule does more for recovery than an extra hour of sleep on one random night.

Some fatigue is a normal, expected part of training. Overtraining is different — it's fatigue that doesn't clear with normal rest and starts affecting performance and mood. Common warning signs include:
